MRSA Superbug Causes

When people tell someone that they have an infection, it isn’t a big deal. When someone says that they have MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection, it suddenly is a big deal. The cause of infection is a bacterium that is resistant to most antibiotics and other forms of treatment. A healthy body can fight off infection. It can be done with naturally occurring immunities to the bacteria or with medical help. When a person is unable to fight the MRSA bacteria, he or she will become infected. The MRSA infection then grows and can spread in the body if left untreated. It can also be spread to others through contact.

Common Causes

A MRSA Superbug infection begins with a sore or red spot on the skin. This is usually the point of introduction. An open area like a prick, scrape, cut, etc. is exposed to MRSA from the bacteria already on the skin or by coming in contact with the bacteria from another source. It can happen in the community or in a facility like a hospital, nursing home, locker room, etc.

MRSA Superbug can also be caused when contact with the bacteria occurs during a medical procedure, a surgical operation, dental procedure, etc. The infection can be internal or at the site of an incision. When infection is caused this way, it may be more difficult to identify the cause and source of the infection. An internal infection may not be as obvious as a sore on the skin.

Community and Health Care Causes

When MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is acquired in the community (CA-MRSA) it is usually spread at a facility that houses a large number of people. It can also be caused from coming in contact with equipment that is used by someone who has a MRSA infection. Health care acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA) is cause by infection from a hospital or medical facility. Community acquired and health care acquired infections can happen at places like the following:

  1. Nursing homes
  2. Group homes
  3. Day care (children or adults)
  4. Gyms/fitness centers
  5. Football playing fields
  6. Hospitals
  7. Medical facilities

People who are not aware they have the infection cause the infection to spread. Also equipment that has not been cleaned properly and poor hygiene practices of healthcare workers also cause MRSA Superbug infections.

Reasons MRSA Causes Fear

Since it is difficult to treat MRSA and only a few select antibiotics effectively kill the bacteria, many people are very fearful of being infected by the bacteria. There is cause for concern due to the seriousness of the infection that not treated promptly and spreads in the body. Those with a lowered immune system or skin conditions are at higher risk (burns, eczema, psoriasis, etc.) have cause to be concerned because they are more susceptible to infections like MRSA.

Reducing The Risk of Acquiring MRSA

There are ways to avoid acquiring MRSA. Always use good hygiene practices when caring for open wounds. Keeping your immune system built up to fight off infection helps. When using public workout equipment, sanitize it before use. Covering open wounds, irritated skin, and pricks will prevent the bacteria from coming in contact with the fore mentioned, if you are exposed to the bacteria.

Being aware and educated about MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) will help you spot the signs you are infected you will be able to recognize it and get treated promptly, no matter what the cause of MRSA is.
